Theories and conceptual models in nursing and related fields provide the framework for clinical research and nursing practice. Advanced nursing practice needs these theories and models to guide nurses in their delivery of patient care. Multiple theories and conceptual models will be analyzed in this essay, examining their applications in nursing practice and other healthcare fields.

Watson’s theory of Human Caring argues that caring is the fundamental principle of nursing practice and a necessary component for achieving healing. This theory enables nurses to achieve their clinical objectives of health promotion, preventing illness, caring for sick individuals, and restoring patient’s health. Gunawan et al. (2022) explains that the theory adopts a holistic approach through which nurses are present with patients, show support, and create healing environments. Intentional patient care promoted by this theory helps build trusting relationships between patients and nurses which leads to better health outcomes. Nurses can apply Watson’s theory to offer patient-focused care while demonstrating compassionate behavior.

According to Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, nursing becomes necessary when people are unable to meet their self-care needs. The theory promotes individuals’ participation in their self-care, holding people accountable for their wellness. Patient self-care interventions are an important part of this theory as it encourages nurses to provide patient education and empowerment that lead to better health outcomes and fewer complications (Yip 2021). In advanced nursing practice, nurses can use this theory to support patients in self-managing their conditions while providing supplemental nursing assistance when needed.

The Biopsychosocial Model provides a holistic approach to understanding health, disease, and illness and delivering healthcare by considering biological, psychological, and social factors. Its patient-focused approach encourages practitioners to consider individual patient backgrounds during treatment to create treatment plans that meet patient needs, resulting in better health outcomes. In chronic disease management, it is used to identify factors that led to the development of an illness, and serves as a guide to train patients about lifestyle modifications that help them improve their quality of life (Sassen, 2023). The model enables nurses to perform assessments and develop personalized care strategies and manage chronic medical conditions.

Patients according to Roy’s Adaptation Model adapt to stimuli from their internal and external surroundings through their interactions with their environment. Using this assessment framework nurses can evaluate patient needs by understanding environmental stimuli and develop proper nursing diagnoses and interventions. Nurses rely apply this model in addressing patient needs across four modes of adaptation including physiologic, self-concept, role function and interdependence (Kumar et al., 2022). This requires nurses to examine all aspects of patients’ environment because it helps create individualized care based on their adaptation capabilities, resulting in better health results and recovery.

In conclusion, these nursing theories and conceptual models provide important patient care approaches nurses need to understand complex healthcare need and guide interventions. Nurses who use these frameworks in their clinical practice can provide better healthcare services and help patients achieve positive health outcomes.
